Capel Manor College: Charlotte

Capel Manor College: Charlotte

Charlotte started with a level 1 diploma in gardening and landscaping at Capel Manor College

Charlotte was 18 years old when she first came to Capel Manor College. She progressed from the introductory course to a level 2 intermediate apprenticeship in horticulture before moving on to her level 3 advanced apprenticeship in horticulture working with the London Borough of Enfield.

The training was broad and included grass cutting and mowing techniques, grounds maintenance, line marking, nature conservation, weeding and much more. Charlotte worked in an assortment of outside spaces to ensure that they were properly maintained and fulfilling their role for both visitors and customers.

The apprenticeship scheme developed Charlotte’s knowledge, ability and confidence in what has been traditionally a male-dominated industry. She wants to go as far as she can with her qualifications and aspires for a management position within the field.

Enfield is one of the greenest boroughs in London. It has 127 parks and open spaces to explore and discover, so it was a great learning environment for Charlotte. Her colleagues were blown away by her work ethic and natural abilities when she was based at Forty Hall. She was also honoured by the Friends of Forty Hall for her work in the walled garden.

Charlotte was delighted with the apprenticeship scheme, where she was able to earn while she learnt. She said: “I have learnt best practice and the way to do things properly. I would definitely recommend an apprenticeship.”
