AstraZeneca: Michelle Spinks

Michelle Spinks, 29, is doing a BTEC level 3 diploma in business administration at AstraZeneca

How long have you worked for AstraZeneca? What do you enjoy about your role?

“Since September 2018, I have been working as a business admin apprentice. I’ve supported various areas of the business, exposing me to different parts of the organisation, science and people, which I really enjoy. I thrive in the fast-paced environment and appreciate the opportunity to work with senior members of staff who have taught me so much.”

Why did you choose to do an apprenticeship at AstraZeneca?

“To gain a professionally recognised and relevant qualification to benefit my career. I was particularly interested in the variety of opportunities within the R&D industry.”

How would you describe the culture at AstraZeneca?

“The culture is all about collaboration and sharing knowledge. There are many opportunities to learn new skills and share ideas, and being an apprentice, many colleagues have guided and supported me throughout projects.”

What would you say has been the most interesting/rewarding project you’ve been involved in and why?

“Part of my diploma includes learning about project management, which is great as it’s such a transferable skill. Project managing our apprentice recruitment for 2019 was really rewarding.”

“I am also managing elements of a lab ‘design and move’ project, working with a variety of stakeholders and external companies. The opportunity to work alongside experienced people is fantastic and I am honoured to be given such a huge amount of responsibility and trust.”
