Sports turf operative apprenticeship

Sports turf operative apprenticeship

On a Sports Turf Operative apprenticeship, you will be responsible for the maintenance, renovation and overall appearance of one or more sports turf surfaces in accordance with the needs of a particular sport.

Most public and private sports facilities have grounds where people can play a number of outdoor sports. These require careful attention and care, which is where sports turf operatives, or groundspersons, come in.

The job can be quite varied, potentially working across a wide range of different sports, including athletics, bowls, cricket, croquet, football, hockey, horse racing, rugby league and union, and tennis. You could also find yourself working anywhere from general parks to first class stadia used by professional teams.

On your Sports Turf Operative apprenticeship you will learn how to identify and apply the correct materials and equipment for a particular job on a field and develop an excellent knowledge of different grasses, soil types, weeds, pests, diseases, turf disorders, artificial surfacing material, underlays, infill material, turf and soil reinforcement material. You will also be instructed in how to assess the impact of weather, ground conditions and usage on the pitch and on playing quality.

In order to maintain and renovate turf surfaces in a safe and appropriate way to ensure games can take place, you will use a range of equipment and machinery, such as mowers, scarifiers, aerators and other specialist turf care equipment, covering hand tools, as well as pedestrian operated, ride-on and tractor-mounted implements.

With the vast range of natural or artificial turf pitches available, throughout the UK and worldwide, now is an excellent time to join this well-established and dynamic profession.
