Sporting excellence apprenticeship

Sporting excellence apprenticeship

This dedicated Advanced Level apprenticeship in Sporting Excellence has been designed to meet the needs of young and talented athletes who have the realistic potential to achieve excellence in their sport and are seeking to perform at the highest level in that sport as their main career goal.

The Sporting Excellence apprenticeship will develop athletes with a better understanding of what it takes to perform at the highest level, including gaining access to high-quality facilities, expertise, equipment, etc. Apprentices will also gain expertise in nutrition, physiology and goal setting as well as ways to improve their life skills and how to progress their career to work in alternative sports employment areas.

Apprentices could be full-time contracted apprentices at professional clubs; full-time athletes identified as potential high performers; or talented young people in the ‘academy environment’ who have not yet been offered full-time terms.

It is recommended that apprentices should have gained a minimum of 5 GCSEs A* to C; however, not meeting this criterion does not exclude talented athletes from the programme.

On completion of this Advanced Level programme, you could become a professional or semi-professional athlete, sports coach or a support officer in a high-performance environment. Alternatively you might choose to enter Further or Higher Education courses studying for a sports coaching or sports science foundation degree, or for an undergraduate programme such as a BSc in Sport and Exercise Science/Sport Management.
