Ship Safe Training Group (SSTG)

The key role played by the merchant navy

As an island nation, we import and export huge quantities of products, and over 95% of this trade is transported by sea. We rely on the ships of the Merchant Navy to transport these goods, many of which we take for granted to be in our supermarkets and to be readily available in our everyday lives.

Ship Safe Training Group (SSTG) have been recruiting young people to train as merchant navy officers for over 40 years. In that time, we have trained thousands to be either:

  • Marine engineers;
  • Navigation deck officers; or
  • Electro tech officers

SSTG works for over 20 shipping companies, has about 400 young people under training and is highly regarded throughout the maritime industry.

The training programmes are designed over three years and are divided into five phases. They can be studied through either HNC, HND or foundation degree. These courses are fully sponsored, allowing the trainee to complete higher education debt free.

Phase 1 is spent at college completing academic studies, phase 2 is undertaken at sea completing the practical elements, then phase 3 is taken back at college, phase 4 at sea, and then the final phase is spent at college completing exams and so on.
