Relationship manager (Banking) apprenticeship

In banks, relationship managers are responsible for providing products and services to a portfolio of customers, to help them achieve their business goals while also delivering the bank’s business plan and meeting the required standards for ethics, risk and governance.

Relationship managers can work in any one of a number of different areas of the bank and, depending on the customer base, may be responsible for a portfolio of small businesses or support a director with larger clients.

Relationship managers act as ‘trusted advisers’ to customers, and build ethically sound relationships that will form the basis of a long-term partnership. They work with customers to identify their ongoing business challenges and provide flexible and innovative solutions, to help them meet their goals. Teamwork is crucial and relationship managers help to bring the right people and functions together, both internally and externally, to collaborate and deliver for the customer.

As an apprentice relationship manager, you are most likely to work in a junior-level position. You will gain an understanding of the range of financial services products and services available to customers, and learn to use planning and modelling tools to analyse financial data. The banking industry has very strict rules about ethical standards, risk and governance, and all employees need to get to grips with these and keep up to date with changes in the regulations.

Apprentices usually specialise in a particular area of banking, such as corporate or commercial, retail, wealth and card services. For all areas, a good level of market awareness and customer understanding is required.

The apprenticeship will typically take four years to complete and after completion you will have experience and qualifications equivalent to an undergraduate degree, although the professional qualifications that you gain will depend upon your level of experience in the sector and the areas of the bank that you work in.
