Property maintenance apprenticeship

Property maintenance apprenticeship

The role of a property maintenance operative is to optimise the condition and quality of a property and to ensure a building is kept in a safe working condition.

Property maintenance operatives understand the mechanism of buildings, including electrical, plumbing, plant, safety systems and equipment, and respond quickly to emergencies to prevent major damage to the building.

As an apprentice property maintenance operative you will gain basic carpentry, electrical, plumbing and decorating skills and will learn how to safely use hand tools such as screwdrivers, power drills, pliers, paper strippers and other tools used in plumbing and carpentry. You work may require you to: carry out interior repairs, e.g. to walls, doors, doorframes or skirting boards, or plaster damage to internal walls; maintain plumbing and drainage systems, e.g. repair WC systems and leaking taps or unblock drains; maintain high levels of water hygiene; safely repair electrical installations according to legal requirements, e.g. replace damaged sockets, plugs, lighting and fuses; carry out refurbishment or deep cleaning; and maintain the grounds and exterior of a building, including drainage and guttering.

You will need to have a flexible approach to your work, a commitment to quality and excellence and be able to work under pressure. A sense of humour and the ability to persist in the face of adversity will help, as things do not always go according to plan when you are dealing with older buildings. A good head for heights is a must too, as you will often find yourself working up a ladder.

Your apprenticeship will enable you to develop a broad range of transferable skills that will enable you to progress into more specialised technical roles in electrical or plumbing work, or into supervisory or management roles within facilities management.
