Plumbing and heating apprenticeship

Plumbing and heating apprenticeship

The Plumbing and Heating apprenticeship covers training in a range of plumbing systems and components and their installation.

The plumbing industry is a key part of construction in the UK. It’s a highly competitive field that employs skilled craftspeople and technicians who work with a wide range of materials and technologies. Plumbers must be familiar with everything from domestic boilers to advanced welding techniques to computerised control systems.

From installing sanitation systems and servicing boilers to laying underground drainage pipes, plumbers work for commercial and domestic clients. In recent years, the industry has also been involved with developing environmentally sound technologies like solar water heating and rainwater harvesting.

As a plumbing apprentice, you’ll learn about the installation and maintenance of plumbing systems and components. You’ll learn how to work under minimal supervision to install and maintain domestic hot water, cold water, sanitation, drainage and rainwater systems as well as central heating systems.

On the Advanced Level apprenticeship, your skills base will broaden to include working with oil- and gas-fired commercial and industrial heating systems and you’ll be able to enter the profession at a higher level. As a plumber, you could find yourself working in many different places – from construction sites to residential homes.
