Teen scoops top apprenticeship accolade

Michael Sharp, an apprentice with Saffron Insurance Services, claimed joint-first place in the Level 3 category alongside Virgin Money nominee, Abigail Robinson.

Nineteen-year-old Michael has experienced a lot of success since taking on his apprenticeship in Cambridgeshire just a year-and-a-half ago.

“It feels great to have won. I know that a lot of people were considered so I’m surprised to have won, but I’m really happy and honoured,” said the trainee account handler, from Haverhill Road, Castle Camps.

“I think I stood out from the rest because of my ability to pick up new skills very quickly. I’ve achieved a lot since I started my apprenticeship, I really enjoy my job and knowing how far I can, and want, to go within the industry has kept me motivated to push on.

“I think it helps to know that my hard work is going towards achieving something. A lot of the time, hard work can go unnoticed because it’s for a long-term goal. So, this award is a real motivator for me to keep on improving and carrying on.”

The former Saffron Walden County High School pupil said his award and apprenticeship experience has given him the confidence to take on more responsibilities with Saffron Insurance, based in High Street, Haverhill.

“It’s difficult to think too far ahead, but I know that I want to deal with bigger and more complex risks in insurance,” he added.

“The way Saffron Insurance has embraced the apprentice scheme has really helped me to learn a lot very quickly. I’ve been sent on courses, I’ve been given responsibility and I’ve been well supported by my colleagues.”

Michael and Abigail pipped second-placed Paige Broome (FedEx Express), Kerry Stevenson (Royal Bank of Scotland) and Jack Mabbutt (Zurich) in joint-third and fourth-placed Daniel Hughes (Royal Bank of Scotland) in the annual BPP Apprentice of the Year awards.
