Management and leadership skills have a major impact on the development, productivity and performance of organisations of all sizes and across all sectors of the economy. The best leaders and managers are innovative, creative, visionary and inspirational.

Managers and team leaders oversee one or more employees or departments to make sure they carry out assigned duties as required. It’s up to them to make the most of company resources (products, people, money, time) in order to keep the wheels turning and generate a profit.

Managers need a good understanding of business strategy to make smart decisions. It’s a big job involving many tasks, motivating employees to reach their potential and creating a strong corporate culture so that people will want to work for the company.

As a management apprentice your role will vary depending on the level and sector in which you are employed. You may be involved in planning, allocating and monitoring the work of the team, giving feedback, briefing teams, supporting team members, managing conflict, resolving problems, procuring supplies, project management, agreeing budgets and managing and improving customer service. You will need to be sensitive to issues such as ethnicity, culture, gender and disability, and be aware of the potential for different and more creative approaches that diversity in general brings.

It helps to be a natural leader and good communication skills are a must. There are many types of management roles. In some small businesses there may be only one manager, while large organisations will have several ranks of junior managers, finance managers, sales managers and so on.

Good managers are essential to the success of any business (this is reflected in their pay packets each month) and the skills gained on this apprenticeship are transferable to any business or industry sector.

Team Leading – Intermediate Level apprenticeship

The Intermediate Level apprenticeship in Team Leading has been developed to support those working as team leaders, section leaders, floor managers, help desk managers, trainee supervisors, team co-ordinators and other team leader positions.

Management – Advanced Level apprenticeship/ Higher Apprenticeship

The Advanced Level apprenticeship has been developed to support those working as first line managers, section managers, assistant managers, trainee managers, senior supervisors, junior non-commissioned officers (armed forces) and other management positions. At Higher Level, apprentices might take on a role as a manager, head of function or area manager.

Leadership and Management – Higher Apprenticeship

The Leadership and Management Higher Apprenticeship has been developed to support those working as managers, senior managers, heads of department, directors and other senior management positions.

Level:

Intermediate (Level 2), Advanced (Level 3), Higher (Level 4, Level 5)

Starting salary:

Managers work in all industries, so salaries vary

Job roles:

Intermediate – Team leader, Section leader, Floor manager, Helpdesk manager, Trainee supervisor, Team coordinator

Advanced – Section manager, First line manager, Assistant manager, Trainee manager, Senior supervisor, Junior non-commissioned officer (armed forces)
