Samantha sparks US exchange opportunity

25-year old Samantha Jones is employed by Melvin John Electrical, based in Coleford. As one of JTL’s ambassadors, Samantha is helping to raise awareness of the opportunities for young women in the electrical industry and attempting to encourage them to take up apprenticeships.

Samantha was this year’s apprentice exchange winner in the JIB (Joint Industry Board) Overseas Apprentice Exchange scheme and in May 2015 she flew to the USA and spent six weeks living and working in New York. During her trip she learnt how electrical contracting works in the country and acted as an ambassador for the UK industry. She was delighted to win the exchange opportunity and found the rigorous selection process quite demanding. Samantha impressed the judges with her preparation, confidence and commitment to promoting the industry.

Commenting on her experience, Samantha said: “I really enjoyed my overseas ambassador role, working in a different environment, and experiencing the differences in work ethic, training and installation methods. I’ve been able to bring back positive and negative feedback, which could help the industry standards in this country. It was also very interesting for me to see at what level women are engaged within the electrical industry in the USA.”
