Information security – Higher apprenticeship

Information security – Higher apprenticeship

Information security is one of the most pressing issues of our time.

The Government has estimated the cost of cyber crime to the UK economy as being in the region of £27 billion a year and attacks on computer networks have been highlighted as one of the biggest emerging security threats to the UK, alongside international terrorism and international military crises.

Information security therefore is vital to the survival of every company in every business sector, to protect them against suspects that include employees and competitors as well as criminals and terrorists, and to prevent financial loss, intellectual property theft and loss of customers.

As an apprentice, you could work in one of a variety of roles. For example, as a network security officer, you would assist with planning, implementing, upgrading and monitoring security measures for the protection of computer networks and information. Information assurance officers help to ensure that information is protected from unauthorised access and is only disclosed in accordance with the company’s security strategy or legislation. A role as a penetration tester would see you evaluating computer and network security by simulating attacks from external and internal threats, while as an assistant secure system developer you would help to create secure software and introduce secure programming techniques.

If you enjoy analysing and solving problems, have a broad knowledge of technology and are able to work logically and methodically when under pressure this apprenticeship could be for you.
