The Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales is a professional membership organisation that promotes, supports and regulates over 146,000 ICAEW Chartered Accountants around the world.

You need to complete the ACA qualification to become an ICAEW Chartered Accountant.

A growing number of organisations now offer the opportunity to train for the ACA qualification straight after A-levels (or equivalent). School leaver programmes vary but typically it takes 3–5 years to complete. You could be a fully qualified ICAEW Chartered Accountant by the time you’re 21.

Most organisations will ask you to prepare for the ACA qualification by completing one of the following:

  • ICAEW Certificate in Finance, Accounting and Business
  • Higher Apprenticeship in Assurance/Audit
  • Association of Accounting Technicians qualification (AAT)
