Plan properly and study every day

Rebecca Wood is working towards becoming an ICAEW Chartered Accountant on a Higher Apprenticeship with Edward Egglestone & Co.

After doing some in-depth research into the different school-leaver vacancies available, ICAEW’s Higher Apprenticeship caught Rebecca’s attention. She thought it would be an excellent opportunity and would allow her to achieve the ACA qualification faster than any other route.

Once she had finished her A-level exams, Rebecca was successful in securing a Higher Apprenticeship with Edward Egglestone & Co. She is currently working towards becoming an ICAEW Chartered Accountant.

According to Rebecca, the key to making your experience as a higher apprentice even better is proper planning and making sure you put in some study time every day. Finding something you love to do after work is her recommendation for helping to maintain a good work–life balance.

Despite what some people think about accountancy, Rebecca finds the work really diverse. Every day is different and the variety of clients keeps her on her toes. What’s more, she has had the chance to develop her communication, problem-solving and team-working skills, all of which she is confident will help her in any job role.

As to what is her favourite part of her job, Rebecca says: “I really enjoy the problem-solving aspect. There is nothing more satisfying than getting a set of accounts to balance and working out the reasons why they didn’t balance to begin with. I also love working as part of a team.”

For anyone wondering what to do once they leave school, Rebecca would definitely advise school leavers to look at their options when leaving school. “I am so glad that I chose the Higher Apprenticeship route as it has given me so many opportunities for the future,” she says. “Not only am I gaining valuable work experience and training, but I am earning a salary at the same time.”
