“A highways electrician/service operative supervises the installation and servicing of electrical equipment and systems on roads and motorways”

This apprenticeship covers two roles: highways electrician and service operative, which are focused on the installation and servicing of street lighting, traffic signals, safety cameras and highway communications. As an apprentice, you’ll install, maintain (including fault diagnosis and repairs), inspect and test low voltage highway electrical equipment and systems. A key task of these roles will be to carry out emergency attendance and emergency works (for example, where a car has hit a streetlight), and ensure appropriate health, safety and environmental procedures, including the requirements of the Highway Electrical Registration Scheme, are applied. You’ll ensure your work is carried out efficiently, effectively and safely, while maintaining effective working relationships and being flexible enough to work on your own or as part of a team, and supervise the work of others.

Duration: 24 months

Relevant school subjects: English, maths and science

Entry requirements: Completion of the level 2 highway electrical maintenance and installation operative apprenticeship

Achievement upon completion: Level 3 (Advanced)—equivalent to A-levels at grades A to E

Potential salary upon completion: £18,000 per annum
