Cybersecurity technologist

Job roles: Cyber operations manager, Security architect, Penetration tester, Security analyst, Risk analyst, Intelligence researcher, Security sales engineer, Cybersecurity specialist, Information security analyst, Governance and compliance analyst, Information secu

The primary role of a cybersecurity technologist is to apply an understanding of cyber threats, hazards, risks, controls, measures and mitigations to protect an organisation’s systems and people.

Those focused on the technical side work on areas such as security design and architecture, security testing, investigations and response. On the risk analysis side, the focus is on areas such as operations, risk, governance and compliance.

Whether you work on the technical or the risk analysis side, as a Cybersecurity Technologist apprentice you will work to achieve the required security outcomes by developing and applying your practical knowledge of information security to deliver solutions that fulfil your employer organisation’s requirements. You will learn how to find where a system is vulnerable to cyber attack, and how to analyse and evaluate security threats and hazards to a system or service or processes. You will research and investigate some common attack techniques and be able to recommend how to defend against them. By the end of your apprenticeship, you will be able to undertake a security risk assessment for a simple system without direct supervision, and propose basic remediation advice for your employer.

This apprenticeship is recognised for entry to both the Institute of Information Security Professionals (IISP) and the Chartered Institute for IT (BCS) as an Associate Member, and for entry onto the Register of IT Technicians confirming SFIA level 3 professional competence.
