“A healthcare science associate works in hospitals, primary care and other healthcare settings, carrying out routine technical and scientific procedures, and supporting healthcare science practitioners and clinical scientists”

Healthcare science associates support the work of practitioners and clinical scientists in performing high-quality, safe diagnostic, therapeutic and monitoring technical and scientific procedures, from conception to end of life within hospitals, general practice and other settings in the healthcare sector and other specialisms. As an apprentice, you’ll perform a range of routine technical and scientific procedures, with minimal supervision. Depending on the discipline of your role, you’ll support the development and maintenance of standards and protocols, contribute to the safe, effective and efficient functioning of diagnostic and therapeutic services, control the technical processing of biological samples and physiological and other diagnostic tests, and perform routine investigations and telephone authorised results according to protocols.

Duration: 24 months

Relevant school subjects: Science

Entry requirements: Depend on employer, but likely A-levels or equivalent qualifications

Achievement upon completion: Level 4 (Higher)—equivalent to a foundation degree and above

Potential salary upon completion: £18,000 per annum
