Food and drink apprenticeship

Getting food on the shelves depends on a range of different people doing various jobs within the food and drink supply chain.

For example, in order for a loaf of bread to reach your trolley, it has to go through a sequence of developing, testing, sourcing, processing, baking, packaging and distribution.

A Food and Drink apprenticeship covers a wide range of job roles within the sector, from quality assurance roles and bakers to logistics officers, new product development and butchers. As an apprentice, you could specialise in any of the main operations involved in food and drink manufacturing and processing. This may include some exciting production areas, such as dairy processing; bakery production; butchery, fishmongering; or chocolate manufacturing.

Your work-based learning programme will involve both on-the-job and off-the-job training. Through this combination you will develop technical and practical skills and the knowledge required to do your job.

This apprenticeship offers many options, whether you’re someone who likes to be physically on the go, or are interested in how food is made and how the machinery used to make food works. You’ll get to work as part of a busy team, which will involve solving problems, meeting specific targets and striving to ensure that food safety requirements are met. The prospects are good and the job is an important one – the demand for food will always be with us.

The following new apprenticeships have recently been approved and will be ready for delivery from September 2016: Food Engineering and Maintenance, Food and Drink Process Operator, Bakery and Food Technologist. See for more details.
