Facilities management apprenticeship

Facilities management apprenticeship

Facilities managers are responsible for the systems and people that make a building operate effectively, efficiently and safely.

Activities include anything from managing the maintenance of the heating or air conditioning systems to managing the catering, cleaning, reception and the security of a building. In many cases the facilities manager will be responsible for environmental management, business planning, risk management and will also be likely to be responsible for a large team of staff.

An apprenticeship in Facilities Management is a qualification where you will learn about the specifics of facilities management as well as general management topics.

As an apprentice you could be working as an assistant to a facilities manager, supervising one or more of the facilities or services. You will probably be involved in resolving issues and making sure the facilities are running smoothly. You could also be employed by a facilities management company in a junior or trainee role. Higher level apprentices at Level 4 will probably work as a facilities manager or building services manager; while at Level 5 the job roles will have added responsibility such as managing larger or multi-site contracts.

On the Facilities Services pathway your duties could include securing a site, setting up rooms for events, assisting with cleaning, site emergency and evacuation procedures, porterage, carrying out minor maintenance repairs, reading energy meters and using business management systems to control heating and ventilation.

Types of buildings that you will be working in vary and could include offices, shopping centres, hospitals, schools, colleges, universities and sports stadiums.

Facilities Management apprentices can also apply for associate membership to the British Institute of Facilities Management (BIFM).
