EY: Meet Matthew

EY: Meet Matthew

Meet Matthew, your insider on the EY business apprenticeship

He went to school in Upminster where his favourite subjects were maths, chemistry and physics. Now, he’s an apprentice based in London, working with some of the world’s best-known businesses.

What’s the apprenticeship experience really like?

I actually got a taste of EY before applying to the apprenticeship when I completed the Smart Futures programme through the EY Foundation. I enjoyed this so much that I knew I wanted to  join the firm as soon as possible.

Now I’m back here as an apprentice, I love that each day is different and brings new challenges, which makes for an exciting working environment.

What’s been your highlight so far?

Early on, I got the chance to join an EY partner and other senior colleagues at a closing meeting.

This is a really important event in the audit process, where we present the findings, conclusions and recommendations of our audit to the client. Meeting in influential people, including our client CFO, and seeing all the team’s hard work come together was an amazing experience and a real highlight for me.

What are your top tips for others looking at apprenticeships?

If you’re sure you want to get into a career in accounting and finance, an apprenticeship might be the right choice for you. Get straight into the top professional accountancy qualification alongside work  experience and a good salary (with no student debt)–you can’t beat it! Once you’re here, you need to take ownership of your progress and career development. It’s different to school, but very empowering.
