Michael Voller completed a Horticulture apprenticeship at Capel Manor College and has secured a full-time role at Tottenham Hotspur’s training ground

Michael Voller started his apprenticeship at Capel Manor, aged 16. As a practical outdoors person, learning on the job appealed to him as did being paid at the same time. Michael completed the Horticulture apprenticeship programme at both Intermediate and Advanced levels, giving him the opportunity to go on to full-time employment maintaining the gardens at Tottenham Hotspur’s training ground.

“I could never sit in an office so staying on at school wasn’t an option for me. After three years as an apprentice, I gained full-time employment maintaining the gardens at Tottenham Hotspur’s training ground in Enfield.

“Capel is the ideal place to train. You get to work on gardens throughout the seasons alongside experienced gardening professionals with access to lots of different tools and machinery. Because of the apprenticeship scheme, I now have a whole career mapped out.”

Michael has now been employed by Tottenham Hotspur for two and a half years and is an integral member of the gardening team.

“I have been involved with the development of the gardens at the brand new training complex and the construction of a roof garden at Lilywhite House, the new White Hart Lane headquarters,” he says.

“While working for Tottenham I have gained management experience running a small team of gardeners and apprentices in the absence of the head gardener. I have continued my professional development by completing a course on the safe use of tractor-mounted pesticide sprayers and I have also increased my knowledge of sports turf and the maintenance required.”

Michael has gone from being an apprentice to managing and coaching Tottenham Hotspur’s current apprentices.
