Every day, bakers make and sell millions of loaves of bread and baked goods, such as cakes, pies, pastries and biscuits, to customers in the UK and around the world. There are many varied employment and career opportunities in the bakery industry. As a baker, you may be employed in a traditional craft bakery or in a large automated processing plant, a specialist retail shop, or supermarket. You may even opt to set up and manage their own businesses. You’ll train to make a range of breads and baked goods, using traditional craft and mechanical processing methods. You’ll learn to work safely and hygienically, following recipes and specifications, to ensure the quality and standards of products meet customer requirements.

Duration: 18 months

Relevant school subjects: Food technology

Entry requirements: Depend on employer, but likely GCSEs or equivalent

Achievement upon completion: Level 2 (Intermediate)—equivalent to GCSEs

Potential salary upon completion: £18,000 per annum
