Aerospace engineer apprenticeship

Aerospace engineer apprenticeship

The UK aerospace industry is one of the most exciting areas of engineering and covers a wide range of craft that fly in the Earth’s atmosphere and surrounding space.

Aerospace organisations research, design, manufacture, operate and maintain aircraft and/or spacecraft, including civil airliners, satellites, helicopters, rockets and more. It is a very diverse industry and has many different commercial, industrial and military applications.

As an apprentice Aerospace Engineer, you will work primarily within a specific engineering discipline, such as airframe, design and stress, systems integration, support engineering, quality or advanced manufacturing engineering. You will focus on all aspects related to the full lifecycle of systems and products, while complying with statutory regulations and organisational safety requirements. You will learn to use and interpret engineering data and documentation such as drawings, reports and computer-generated models. Working both individually and as part of a team, you will be expected to design, develop, specify, analyse, test, validate and modify designs and solutions to satisfy customer requirements and in-service operations.

After a period of foundation skills and technical knowledge development, all apprentices will be required to achieve a Level 2 Aerospace and Aviation qualification.

Further skills and technical knowledge development will lead to a Level 4 Engineering and Manufacture qualification plus a Level 5 Aerospace Engineering qualification. Those who successfully complete the Aerospace Engineer apprenticeship programme will be awarded a Level 6 Bachelor Honours Degree (BEng).

The UK engineering sector has a reputation for world-class levels of quality and entry requirements for this apprenticeship are high. You will need A-level or equivalent qualifications, to include maths and at least one other STEM-based subject, plus five GCSEs at grades A–C.
